Billboards can have an enormous impact on a community. Early in the history of MAKUS, we knew we wanted a billboard to create public awareness of our cause. Robbie Lail, our volunteer graphic designer, came up with our striking visual, which features a photograph of Michael Appleby and a brief but powerful message. Clear Channel Outdoor joined in to donate billboard space around the Chattanooga area, and other generous corporate sponsors have underwritten the substantial cost of printing our billboard sheets.
The first MAKUS billboard went up on January 10, 2003 on Chattanooga’s busy Brainerd Road. Currently we have 10 billboards and a number of smaller boards on Chattanooga’s public buses. We know our message is having an impact, since we are receiving testimonials from people who have seen our billboard or videos and been moved and affected. We hope to work with Clear Channel Outdoor to implement the 'I didn’t. You can. Buckle up!' campaign on billboards across the state of Tennessee in the near future.
