Tips For Parents

Parent's Tip: Teens plus teens in a car equals disaster.  Just say 'no' to passengers to allow the teen to become a more skilled driver before adding variables into the mix.

Parent's Tip: Tell your kids to buckle up or walk. No negotiation. When they have kids, they'll understand!

Parent's Tip: Teach your teen to drive defensively -- anticipating conditions and situations that increase risk. Watch for poor driving habits like not signaling, sloppy turns, speeding, lack of alertness or overcorrecting.

Parent's Tip: State laws and instruction are great ways to get your teen started on the road to safe driving, but what you do with and for your teen makes the most difference.

Parent's Tip: The Three Second Rule.  Let your teen know that adding additional space between cars will not slow down their travel time any more than a few minutes. Better to arrive a few minutes late than not at all!

Parent's Tip: Remind your teen that even while backing up at a slow speed the vehicle still can cause serious damage and harm others.

Parent’s Tip: For effective learning, don’t just talk and instruct your teen driver – listen and make sure they are understanding their surroundings and identifying potential risks.

Parent’s Tip:  When your novice driver shares observations while driving, you gain a better understanding of what they see and how they evaluate driving conditions so you can correct them along the way before bad habits become ingrained.

Parent’s Tip:  Make it a hard-and-fast rule with your teen that cell phone use in the car is limited to calling home or reporting an emergency.  They can talk to friends from home.

Parent’s Tip: Not every 16 year old is ready to drive. If your teen isn’t ready to begin the learning process, postpone that trip to the DMV.
