Currently, MAKUS sponsors traveling Driver Safety Awareness programs in high schools around the Chattanooga area. Our teen program currently includes a driver safety curriculum, a driving simulator, random seatbelt checks at school, and a choice of two videos.
Our dream is to house these programs in a state-of-the-art Driver's Skill Center for Chattanooga area teens, where they and their peers can explore the risks and skills needed to become safe drivers. Our Center includes plans for a driving simulator lab, computer lab, conference room, theater and much more. It is being planned to be an exciting place where teens will want to come – and from which they will leave with practical knowledge about how to handle real-life driving situations.
The Driver’s Skill Center, and especially the simulator lab, will allow teens to practice the proper responses to situations that can occur during routine driving – such as taking a sharp curve too fast and feeling your wheels leave the road. Students will get hands-on experience through simulation before they are on the road and facing trouble in real life.
MAKUS envisions the Driver’s Skill Center as a strong partner to high schools and driving schools, with heavy emphasis on meaningful field trips at an affordable cost. We believe it will become a model for other cities to use in creating their own similar centers.
As with all MAKUS programs, we believe our Driver’s Skill Center will save lives. Thanks to Franklin & Associates architects, we have conceptual drawings of the Center. Our next step will be securing the $4 million in funding needed to make the concepts into reality. Stay tuned as our plans progress…
