...It is impossible to eradicate or forget his essence.
Jonathan Meeks

Jonathan William Meek lived his life like a shooting star – fast, stunning and glorious, says his family -- and all too brief. He was born on February 11, 1984, in Bridgend, South Wales and moved with his parents and sisters to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1990 where the family established a successful antiques auction. Jon attended grade school at St. Jude in Chattanooga and then went on to Notre Dame High School. He passed away in a tragic car accident on September 8, 2000.

Jon was adored by his parents and sisters, whom he entertained and enthralled with his peculiar and particular sense of humour. According to them, life with the sometimes-obstinate Jonathan could also be incredibly infuriating, but they say it was never boring. “Never embarrassed to be affectionate in public and incredibly loving to those close to him, Jon seemed at times like an old soul who had returned to earth to provide guidance, inspiration and comfort to people who came into contact with him,” says his sister, Victoria. “He pushed life to the utmost, trying to cram experience and meaning into every second.”

With his selfless kindness to others, people naturally gravitated towards his presence. He was highly intelligent and artistic, and could produce beautifully intricate pencil drawings of imaginary creatures. He had an expansive knowledge of lizards and reptiles and had expressed an interest in studying herpetology in college. Jon loved music of all kinds, from Reggae to Motown, and would spend hours playing bongos in his room. “He was handsome and tall,” notes his sister, “actually rather untidy and scrawny, but with underlying muscle built from time spent moving furniture at the family business.”

His tragic passing brought disbelief, grief and utter sadness to those who knew him, and his immediate family still feels the huge void left by his death. Since his parents made the decision to allow Jon to be an organ donor, however, his spirit and energy live on in the people who continue to lead healthy and productive lives through his gift.

Jonathan is remembered everyday by his family and friends, who still laugh at the memories of his antics and behaviour. His smile, positive attitude and totally individual outlook on life are still fresh in their minds – Jon may not be with them physically, but it is impossible to eradicate or forget his essence.

His family asks that others please remember to always wear a seatbelt when driving. They also ask others to remember – as they do – the words of Jim Morrison of The Doors:

“Death does not separate, only lack of love.”

...He was always making sure everybody was okay.

...I guess God needed an angel that night.

...It is impossible to eradicate or forget his essence.

…He gave the ultimate gift by becoming an organ donor.

…He wanted to volunteer because he wanted to help others
